The Time of Your Life

Sailing is a particular state as it amplifies the awareness of the perception of time. Specifically, I find that in the act of ploughing a liquid medium, quicksilver not only in its appearance but also in its form, with the sole help of the wind, brings about an expansion of temporal space. The condition of sailing reiterates the same image for an indefinite time; in this recurring image all other senses sum and expand themselves. In every image I seek to remember a sensation, and this sensation is always the same and yet different. Dilation of time and increased awareness become a precious alchemic composite that helps, and almost obliges us, to recover a more natural condition where it is easier to observe the meaning of those moments that “usually” go unnoticed, and where it is easier to absorb those sensations that rarely have the time to be fixed in our consciousness. The sensation that I try to convey is that privileged condition in which the rarefaction of events amplifies their power. The power is that of a newly reclaimed time, our time, the time which Seneca calls “the time of life”. That very precious time that we think infinite, risking to die without ever having truly lived. Tyrant time is thus the theme I address, the time that we have to regain, or not lose, whenever we can. Sailing “necesse est” in every sea, through every hardship, and in every time, to gain a more ample vision of the meaning of our small world.
